Thank you for visiting! please support vintage drum history.

Here is a partial list of drum names that were imported into the USA during the 60's and 70's. Many of these drums were originally made by what we now know as Tama and Pearl. In most cases, you can easily tell that the drums were made in Japan by the direction of the wood on the interior of the shell. If the grain runs up and down (edge to edge) then it is most likely a Japanese import Kit. You can view some of the drum badges listed below by visiting the Japanese drum badge page.

To see two examples of Japanese snare drums visit this page.

Value is a big topic when people ask about these drums. Many times you see them listed on Ebay for way more then they are worth and more then likely it is a seller that does not know what they are and by appearance think they are worth a lot of money.

Realistically, the snare drums usually sell for between $50 and $100 (depends on the unique finish) and the sets sell for between $125 and $300 also depending on the finish.

Many times the drums look very similar to USA drum makers and that is because they were copying the look of Slingerland Gretsch and Ludwig drums of the time.

Sound is also a big topic about these drums and I personally think they can sound pretty good with the proper heads and tuning. They will not of course match the sound of their American version drums because they were built with an entirely different wood construction process.
